Yellow and pink days are happy like buzzing bees and jumping flamingos, directly in contrast to black days like mad and loud wolves, howling and growling at every cloud.Ĭolor cognizance is an essential step of a child’s development. Brown days are like slow bears, gray days are like still owls, and purple days are like dragging dinosaurs. Colors like brown, gray, and purple are associated with sadness and stagnancy. These colors have the modifier bright attached to them because other shades of red and blue can be characterized as darker, which would oppositely be aligned with low energy. Bright red and blue days are associated with high energy, like a kicking horse and a flapping bird. This can foster negative self-concept for Black and Brown children and teach misleading information about various identities and diversity.Įmotions are not only partnered with colors in this book, but also with animals. These designations reinforce narratives that darkness is bad and lightness is good. Dark colors represent emotions ranging from anger to sadness, while light colors represent emotions like happiness. However, Seuss also presents stereoptical messages about colors. Seuss attempts to give children a language to express their feelings by likening them to colors. (Sept. My Many Colored Days intends to teach early elementary children that it is normal to experience different emotions on different days and even on the same day, which sometimes makes it hard to understand and express yourself. But the pointed message of Oh, the Places You'll Go! and the genius of Seuss's early work go missing. The characteristically catchy Seussian rhyme could help turn a Gray Day into a ''busy, buzzy'' (Yellow) one, and the snazzy die-cut jacket gives this volume an immediate lift above the competition. Husband and wife Johnson and Fancher (Cat, You Better Come Home) do not mime the author's pen-and-ink creations but work in pasty, expressionistic brushstrokes and blocky typefaces that change with the narrative tone. Spread by spread, the character metamorphoses into animals of varying hues, from an energetic red horse to a secretive green fish to a droopy violet brontosaur (''On Purple Days/ I'm sad./ I groan./ I drag my tail./ I walk alone''). The effort is pleasant but lightweight: ''You'd be/ surprised/ how many ways/ I change/ on Different/ Colored/ Days,'' announces a child, portrayed as a flat, gingerbread-man shape of yellow, then blue, then purple. Seuss, is no exception: he wrote but did not illustrate this rhyme, which assigns colors to moods. The archives of many a late author, from Margaret Wise Brown (Four Fur Feet) to Sylvia Plath (The It-Doesn't-Matter Suit), often yield unpublished manuscripts.
